Purpose:

The Animal Control Bylaw is established under the Municipal Government Act, which authorizes municipalities to regulate and control animals within their boundaries. Council passed this bylaw to help prevent nuisance behaviours, reduce safety risks, and ensure pets do not run at large within the Summer Village of Bonnyville Beach.

Animals Running at Large

  • An animal found loose within the boundaries of the Summer Village of Bonnyville Beach.
  • No owner or caretaker may allow an animal to run at large anywhere in the Summer Village.
  • Boundaries are consistent with the Land Use Bylaw.

Nuisance Animals

Owners must ensure their animals do not:

  • Bite or chase pedestrians
  • Chase or harass livestock, bicycles, or vehicles
  • Bark, howl, or create excessive noise
  • Damage property, waste receptacles, or other animals

Owners are responsible for all damages caused by their animal.

Limit on Number of Pets

A residence may keep no more than:

  • 2 dogs, and
  • 2 cats
  • (over six months of age)

This does not apply to caged birds, fish, or animals kept in aquariums.

Fines and Offenses

Fines

1st Offense: $200

2nd Offense: $400

3rd & Up: $600 per incident

Impoundment:

Loose animals may be held for 72 hours; unclaimed animals may be adopted or euthanized. Owners pay all vet and boarding fees.

Disease Control

Council may order all dogs to be tied or confined. Any dog found at large during this order may be impounded or destroyed
